Tools for Home Renovation Projects

Avid do-it-yourselfers should always have a variety of tools on hand before starting a remodeling project. When building your workshop, look beyond the standard tools such as hammers, pliers, screwdrivers and wrenches.

renovations

If you seem to always be involved in renovations, you’ll need some more professional level tools to get the job done. Look in your workshop to ensure you have the following tools and supplies handy. You’ll need them if you’re always working around the home.

  1. Toolbox – Organization is important when you have many projects going on around the home. When you lack organization, you may find yourself buying tools and supplies that you already have. One key to being organized is to purchase a quality toolbox. This toolbox should have many different compartments along with a handle for lifting and transporting from room to room.

2. Demolition, Crow or Pry Bar– The first step in home remodeling often involves demolition. Make the process easier with a pry bar or demolition tool. This tool is especially important in the removal of kitchen cabinets and counter tops.

3. Dust Mask, Work Gloves and Safety Eyewear – Be safe whenever you are working around the home. Protect your lungs from dust and other contaminants by always wearing a dust mask. Also, protect your eyes from debris with safety glasses and your hands with quality work gloves.

4. Cable, Stud and Pipe Detector – This handy multi-functional tool can be used to detect materials that cannot be seen behind the walls such as wood, metal and wiring.

5. Cordless Drill/Driver – Perhaps one of the most handy tools to have in your repertoire is that of a cordless drill/driver. You’ll use it with almost every home project. Opt for cordless as it allows for much more flexibility. Be sure to purchase a drill set for various applications.

6. Nail Gun and Compressor – Work smarter not harder. Use a nail gun in lieu of the standard hammer and nails process. It is much easier and is also fun to use.

7. Laser Level – Ensure everything is hung evenly with a laser level. Choose one equipped with suction for added ease and convenience.

8. Portable Work Light – Lighting is extremely important when working in the home. This is especially true in areas where lighting has not yet been installed and  while working during after hours when the sun has gone down. Work for longer hours and with added accuracy by using a portable work light such as a waterproof LED work light.

Don’t forget about smaller tools and supplies for your projects too! Make sure you have a pair of scissors and utility knife easily accessible. Electrical and plumber’s tape, a tape measure and an assortment of nails and screws are also a necessity for home improvement.

Janitorial Equipment: Tips for Buying a Wet/Dry Vacuum

Wet/Dry vacuums are one of the most in-demand pieces of janitorial equipment. These machines do double duty. First, much like a standard vacuum, they can quickly sweep up dry spills, like dirt or dust. But they also perform the unique duty of sweeping up liquid spills as well, which are very common in commercial and industrial spaces.

As a maintenance manager, you’ll likely be tasked with picking out a wet/dry vacuum. Fortunately, choosing the proper wet/dry vacuum is a fairly straight-forward decision. The key is sizing the machine properly and choosing the features you will need. If you do that, you’ll have a machine that will help you perform essential tasks that will last you for many years. Here are some tips for people considering to buy a wet/dry vacuum:

  1. Is The Tank the Proper Size?

All wet/dry vacs are built with a tank to hold suctioned materials. These tanks are available in a variety of sizes, but it’s important to choose a tank size that will match your needs. For example, large tanks – which are necessary in industrial and large commercial spaces – average about 100 liters, or 26 gallons. Small- and mid-sized tanks average about 25 to 50 L.

  1. Suction Power

Suction is determined by a number of measures. Most commonly, though, the vacuum’s motor wattage can help you determine which model has the best suction. For example, a wet/dry vac with a 3600-watt motor will have a greater suction power, compared to a model with a 1600-watt motor. Suction is important depending on the materials that you will be using the vac for. For example, some people use vacs to suck debris out of gutters, which requires greater suction than would sucking dusts or smaller particles.

  1. Drain for Liquids

Does the tank have a drain near the bottom so that you can quickly dispense liquids? This is an important feature. Vacuums without one require the tank to be removed and tilted to remove the water or liquid. A drain, on the other hand, makes it easy to place the vacuum near an exit drain and eliminate the liquids from the tank.

  1. Easy-to-Replace Filter

Dusts and fine particles pass through a filter, and over time, these filters must be replaced. Choose a model with high filter accuracy. This means more particles are trapped by the filter and dropped into the tank. Additionally, make sure you’re using the right filter – there are many different types designed for different materials, i.e. fine particle filters and HEPA filters. Finally, these filters should be cleaned regularly to avoid clogging. A model that offers easy access to the filter will enable faster cleaning.

  1. What Accessories Are Included?

Your vacuum will likely be included with a number of accessories, including a hose and various heads. Yet, you might need additional accessories. For example, an extra-long hose might not be included, or you might need a specific head for a certain type of work. Be sure you know what accessories are included.

How to Treat a Sprained Arm or Wrist

Wrist or arm sprains are common but serious injuries. They are most often experienced by athletes or children who lose their balance while playing, running or jumping.

wrist-sprain

If you think you might have a sprain, it is best to have it checked out by a doctor to determine how severe your injury is. Most often, your doctor will recommend that you wear a splint and will provide you with a prescription for some anti-inflammatory medication to help relieve pain.  However, in some cases, surgery may be necessary.

Once you are home, you’ll want to take precautions to ensure you don’t re-injure your arm or wrist. This means getting lots of rest and restricting the movement of your arm or wrist. You’ll also want to apply ice often to relieve pain and swelling. Continue to support your arm with a brace or sling for added protection.

Finally, you’ll need to return to your daily activities slowly. Inform your doctor or medical professional should you see an increase in pain, bruising or swelling.

Tips for Creating a Home Office

Working from home can be extremely rewarding. Aside from not having to get dressed for the office or make a long commute, having a home office allows you to work anytime of the day or night.

Creating a home office can be as simple as placing a desk, chair and computer in an extra room. However, if you work from home often, you’ll want to put much more thought and effort into your home office design. When coming up with a design, make sure your office reflects your personal style and gives your home some added flair.

Organization is extremely important for your productivity. Whether working full-time or part-time from home, your office should always be tidy and well organized. Some items that can help you become and remain organized include:

Not everyone has a spare bedroom in their home. So what do you do if you are limited on space?

  • Convert a closet into an office. Hide your office when not in use by covering it with a curtain or folding doors.
  • Multi-purpose space. For example, you can create a dining room/office combo by selecting a credenza or buffet that is of height to use as a desk. Papers, files, etc. can also be stored in the credenza. Choose dining room chairs on wheels so that they can be easily rolled from the table to the desk. Other ideas include a suspended or floating desk in a bedroom or foyer.
  • Make space in your garage, attic or basement. With a little work, an unused space can also be transformed into a functional office space.                                           modern-home-office-decorating-ideas

Comfort is also very important when choosing items to place in your home office. This includes:

  • Ergonomic seating
  • Adequate lighting
  • Hiding wires and cords
  • Protecting floors with a chair mat.
