Avid do-it-yourselfers should always have a variety of tools on hand before starting a remodeling project. When building your workshop, look beyond the standard tools such as hammers, pliers, screwdrivers and wrenches.
If you seem to always be involved in renovations, you’ll need some more professional level tools to get the job done. Look in your workshop to ensure you have the following tools and supplies handy. You’ll need them if you’re always working around the home.
Toolbox – Organization is important when you have many projects going on around the home. When you lack organization, you may find yourself buying tools and supplies that you already have. One key to being organized is to purchase a quality toolbox. This toolbox should have many different compartments along with a handle for lifting and transporting from room to room.
2. Demolition, Crow or Pry Bar– The first step in home remodeling often involves demolition. Make the process easier with a pry bar or demolition tool. This tool is especially important in the removal of kitchen cabinets and counter tops.
3. Dust Mask, Work Gloves and Safety Eyewear – Be safe whenever you are working around the home. Protect your lungs from dust and other contaminants by always wearing a dust mask. Also, protect your eyes from debris with safety glasses and your hands with quality work gloves.
4. Cable, Stud and Pipe Detector – This handy multi-functional tool can be used to detect materials that cannot be seen behind the walls such as wood, metal and wiring.
5. Cordless Drill/Driver – Perhaps one of the most handy tools to have in your repertoire is that of a cordless drill/driver. You’ll use it with almost every home project. Opt for cordless as it allows for much more flexibility. Be sure to purchase a drill set for various applications.
6. Nail Gun and Compressor – Work smarter not harder. Use a nail gun in lieu of the standard hammer and nails process. It is much easier and is also fun to use.
7. Laser Level – Ensure everything is hung evenly with a laser level. Choose one equipped with suction for added ease and convenience.
8. Portable Work Light – Lighting is extremely important when working in the home. This is especially true in areas where lighting has not yet been installed and while working during after hours when the sun has gone down. Work for longer hours and with added accuracy by using a portable work light such as a waterproof LED work light.
Don’t forget about smaller tools and supplies for your projects too! Make sure you have a pair of scissors and utility knife easily accessible. Electrical and plumber’s tape, a tape measure and an assortment of nails and screws are also a necessity for home improvement.

Many hikers tend to hibernate during the winter, thinking it’s not a good time to enjoy this refreshing outdoor sport. Nonetheless, there are many reasons to continue hiking even in the colder months. Along with it being a great time of year to enjoy breathtaking views of snowy mountains, many busy parks and trails are less-crowded during the winter season.
Unlike hiking in the warmer months, winter hiking requires a lot more preparation. This includes the purchase of additional winter gear and equipment to ensure one’s safety.
Here’s a few tips to follow when planning your next winter hike.
Dress in Layers
Because the weather can change quickly, it is important to be ready for any weather condition. The best way to do this, is to dress in layers. This way you can remove or put on clothing as needed. Check the weather before you leave and shop for quality winter gear such as:
Winter or Mountaineering Boots
Waterproof Pants/Jacket
Scarf
Hat
Gloves or Mittens
Winter Socks
Get Started Early
It’s always wise to get started on your hike early. This is especially important in the winter months when daylight is limited. In case you become lost or darkness comes early because of weather changes, always carry a high power, waterproof headlamp with additional lithium batteries (ensured to withstand harsh weather conditions).
Carry Safety Equipment
Although it may be tempting to carry lots of equipment, choose only the essentials that include what you can carry comfortably in your backpack. Some must-have items include:
Find another enthusiastic hiker to tag along with you anytime you embark on a winter hike. Just as important, be sure to let someone know where you are going and the time you expect to return. This way, if you have not contacted them by the time you had planned, they will be able to contact the authorities and get a search rescue started early, to greatly improve your chance of survival.
Choose Trails You are Familiar With
Finally, when hiking in the winter, it is wise to choose a trail that you or your companion are familiar with. This will minimize your risk of getting lost as winter hikes can be quite a challenge for those with minimal experience.
Winter is in full swing, and with it comes the inevitable wintertime chore: Shoveling snow. If you don’t yet have a solid snow shovel, you better hurry up and buy one before the snow starts falling more frequently.
Shoveling your sidewalks isn’t just a neighborly good deed. In many cities, it’s required by law. Failing to shovel your walk may result in fines. But that’s not the only reason you should make it a habit to shovel snow from the walkways in front of your house following a winter storm. Here are four top reasons you should shovel your walk this winter:
Fines for Failing to Shovel
As mentioned above, many cities and municipalities require citizens to shovel their walks. If not, you might get fined, and fines for not shoveling can be costly. In New York City, for instance, possible fines can run up to $150 and repeat offenders might face jail time up to 10 days. That’s right: Not shoveling your walk in New York could land you in jail! The easiest way to avoid fines is to shovel your driveway relatively quickly following a storm. In many cities, homeowners have a specific amount of time to remove the snow before they can face a fine; be sure you know your local ordinances.
Neighborhood Courtesy
Even if you aren’t required by law to shovel your walk, it’s a small chore that will keep you in the good graces of your neighbors. Whether your neighbors walk their dogs each day, or they jog after work, you don’t want to be remembered as the neighbor who doesn’t shovel his sidewalks. Also, the mail carrier and delivery drivers will love you as well.
Ice from Melting Snow
As the weather heats up following a storm, the snow will begin to melt. Yet at night when the temperatures drop, this moisture can freeze, with a sheet of ice developing under the snow. This can be very dangerous for people walking by. Because the ice is hidden behind the snow, people are much more likely to slip, fall and hurt themselves. By shoveling your sidewalks in a timely fashion after a storm, you’re much more likely to develop an ice problem.
Potential Lawsuits
If you fail to keep your walkways safe, you could be on the hook if a pedestrian slips on your property and hurts himself. A judge may find you liable if snow was cleared from public walkways, and lawsuits can get very expensive. Many homeowners have liability insurance to defend themselves against this. But buying an affordable snow shovel is a much more cost-effective solution.

Circular saw blades are used on a range of tools, including miter saws, radial saws, cut-off saws, table saws, as well as standard circular saws. Yet not all blades are created equal. Some are designed for quickly chopping wood, while others are built to deliver finer cuts on metal or plastic.
Circular Saw Blade
It’s important to choose the proper blade, and that means first choosing a blade that fits the saw you will be using. And secondly, choosing a blade that’s suited for the application you will be using it for. Using a blade with fewer teeth, for example, can damage materials like laminate or acrylic. And smaller blades require saws with faster RPMs; if you use a small blade on a large saw, the blade will not receive enough power.
So what do you need to consider? There are a number of factors to think about, but start by finding out what size the blade needs to be. Consult the owner’s manual of your saw to determine the size. This will provide you with three measurements:
Blade Diameter
Arbor Size
Kerf
Blade diameter and arbor size are determined by the saw. Standard circular saws, for instance, most commonly accommodate a 7-1/4-inch diameter blade, while table and miter saws frequently require 10- or 12-inch diameter blades. Each saw is different, and the wrong sized blade can cause a number of problems.
Additionally, kerf is the thickness of the blade. Typically circular saws can accommodate a variety of thicknesses, and you may want to select a blade with a different kerf for several reasons. Thinner kerf blades are sharper, move faster and remove less material with each cut. This is useful when thin, delicate material is being cut. Thicker kerf blades, on the other hand, remove more material; they’re better for thick wood.
Choosing a Circular Saw Blade for Your Application
Once you know the proper size, you can begin to determine the type of blade that you will need. Here’s another measure you will need to know: The number of teeth on the blade. Most commonly blades range from 24 to 80 teeth, and it’s just as important to choose a blade with the proper number of teeth.
Circular Saw Blade Teeth
Here’s why: A blade with more teeth makes cleaner cuts, while blades with fewer teeth make faster cuts with rough edges. Blades that have fewer teeth are commonly used to cut wood. But these blades don’t work particularly well with aluminum. For example, a laminate that’s finished with aluminum oxide will likely chip if a blade with less teeth is used, and the blade will become dull faster because the material is harder.
Aluminum circular saw blades and plastic blades typically have more teeth. In general, aluminum and plastic blades have between 40-80 teeth, depending on the type of metal or plastic. Plastics that are prone to heat damage, though, may require a low friction blade with fewer teeth to reduce the heat that’s created during the cut.
