Tips to Prepare Yourself for a Camping Trip

Camping trips have been a part of our culture all the way back to when we first started living in built-up towns and cities while losing our connection to the wild. The chance to get away from the rat race and live a more simple life for a while certainly has a strong appeal and there’s plenty of great areas you can go and explore in the wilderness, or even in some less busy green spaces near your city.

However, there’s living a rough camping style for fun on your vacation and then there’s getting all the way out there only to find that you’re missing all the essential items without a convenience store nearby to get them. So here’s some tips for what you need to do to prepare for an upcoming camping trip:

Get The Right Tent

This one is a given, right? Unless you’re going in a caravan (ie, cheating) or are staying somewhere that provides you with a tent, you need to take yours with you and have to make sure it’s going to do the job. You need to think about where you’re going, what kind of terrain there will be, what kind of weather you’re expecting and – of course – how many of you there will be. Tents come in all shapes, sizes and levels of sophistication, so choose wisely.

Let There Be Lights

If you’re camping out in the real wilderness, you may be horrified to discover that there aren’t any street lights out there, and the moon is only going to light your way on clear nights. Traditionally you’d take a torch with you, but trying to read a book under torchlight can be a nuisance, so why not take some simple outdoor lights with you? If you’re going somewhere with reliable sunshine during the day, the best option would be solar powered lights so you don’t need to think about powering them.

Control The Pests

One thing urban folks always notice when they’re in the wild on a camping trip is just how rough and wild it can actually get out there. Bugs and other pests can really spoil your fun as nobody likes to get bitten while they’re sleeping, so make sure you take some form of pest control likes zappers and traps to keep your camp bug-free.

Be Ready For Emergencies

When you’re out in the wilderness, there’s lots of things that can go wrong and it’s not easy to get medical attention quickly, so it’s absolutely essential to make sure you take a first aid kit that will supply you with everything you need to deal with for most injuries. Not taking one of these on a camping trip is dangerous and irresponsible, so don’t be that person.

Take Food Storage

A camping trip is more than just a picnic, but you still need to take something with you to allow you to store food safely and keep it at a good temperature. Insulated transport bags, food storage boxes, cooler boxes and film wrappers will all help you make sure you have the food you need.

Tips for Hosting a Backyard BBQ

It’s that time of year again. The sun is shining, the weather is sweet and summer time is about to burst into its full glory. There’s one thing we can all agree on when it comes to summer and that’s firing up the BBQ for an outdoor gathering! Or several. Everybody loves a barbeque on a hot and sunny day; a chance to cook some great food, grab a beer, put on some tunes and relax and celebrate with your friends, family and neighbors.

BBQ’s are a fairly simple way of entertaining; as long as you’ve got the weather and some good food and drink, you don’t need much else to make people happy, but holding a truly great backyard BBQ is still an art that not everybody is a master of. In that spirit, here are some of the best tips we know of to make your BBQ a hot one:

Tidy Up The Yard First!

This isn’t necessarily the most fun part of the day, but your guests will be spending most of their time in your backyard, so they’ll definitely notice if it’s in a state of total chaos and disarray. If you’re not the type to spend hours maintaining your garden, you can still spend a few hours on the day itself making sure it looks good for your guests. You’ll need the right tools of course, and it will definitely be worth it.

Don’t Forget The Lights

Even on a hot and sunny day, the sun has to set at some point and if you don’t want that to be the end of your BBQ, you’ll need to make sure you have some good outdoor lights and/or solar lights.

Make Sure You Have The Essentials

While standing (for the adults) and running around (for the kids) are normal parts of any good BBQ, you still need to make sure you have enough chairs for everyone, so investing in some stackable chairs that you can keep in storage is a must. Another thing you might not think about but will definitely need, is some trays for carrying around all the sauces, cutlery, napkins, etc.

Get The Drinks Right

This doesn’t just mean getting in enough beers and soft drinks to go around. You also need to make sure that you’ve got some way of keeping them cool out in the sun, so ice buckets will be very popular. And for when the sun goes down, you can add some fun to the party with flashing drink glasses?

Some Cooking Tips

And then, of course, you have the actual cooking part itself to take care of. It takes more than a novelty apron and chef’s hat to get this right, so here are some basics you need to know. You have to make sure you’ve got the best fuel for the job, depending on what kind of BBQ you have, and also know when the best time to start cooking is, which is usually just after the flames have died down, when the coals are at their hottest. It goes without saying that you need to keep an eye on the temperature to make sure everything is cooking properly, and that just leaves you with selecting the right food for you and your guests.

Essential Tools To Get You Ready For Spring

It’s that time of year again when the weather starts to get drier and warmer, allowing folks across the country to emerge from their winter cocoons and start to take notice that they’ve neglected their outdoor space over the chilly winter months. It’s all started to look a bit shabby (and not even ‘shabby chic’), so it’s time to take action and do some spring cleaning.

Spring-Cleaning

The concept of spring cleaning dates back to ancient Jewish Passover traditions as well as the Christian tradition of cleaning the altar on Maundy Thursday. It’s persisted into the modern age because spring is when the sunny weather and longer days make it all the more obvious how dusty houses have become and how overgrown the yards and gardens are.

One potential problem we all face at this stage is that we suddenly discover that it isn’t just the flora that’s been neglected and trampled on over the winter, but the equipment we need to do the spring cleaning, has also had a hard time. From hose pipes that explode when you turn them on, to garden tools that have rusted and lost their strength, you might need an upgrade!

The most satisfying part of spring cleaning nowadays has to be when you get the pressure washer out and blast away the winter grime from your yard, footpaths and/or driveway. Whether it’s the powerful blast or the very obvious immediate improvements you can see while using them, it’s a chore that you might actually be looking forward to!

Pressure Washer

The 25L Rechargeable Battery Power Sprayer is one of the best power washers for the job and can be used for a variety of other garden spraying functions. It uses a battery that spares you from the hassle of having to drag a power cord around with you. If you want a more traditional and powerful-looking sprayer, you could consider the 17L Stainless Steel Pressure Sprayer, which is more industrial.

Our Outdoor/Grounds Maintenance section has many items that will be essential for your spring cleaning needs, including garden shears and scissors for trimming hedges and overgrown branches. They are made with high quality stainless steel and are built to last.

Increase Security Around Your Home Using Solar Powered Lighting

One of the most important things about owning a home is making sure it’s secure. Your home is where your possessions are and where your family lives, so it’s only natural to want to make it feel safe. One of the best ways to achieve this is with outdoor lighting. This feature has the double benefit of putting off potential burglars while also increasing peace of mind about going outside after dark, especially for the elderly or vulnerable people.

An even better option is to use solar lighting to save yourself money on electricity bills by letting the sun power up your security lights. It’s eco-friendly, cost-effective AND it keeps your property safe and secure at night, so the only real question is what’s stopping you? When it comes to appearance, there are plenty of options, so let’s have a look at some of them.

The 1000 Lumen Solar PIR Security Motion Light is an ideal solution to your outdoor lighting needs, for example. It’s a classy looking light, constructed from strong and durable aluminium with a motion sensor to pick up anyone in your backyard (or wherever you need it). While offering 1000 lumens, this solar light offers plenty of brightness, including a dimmed option.

solarremotelight

As an alternative, there’s the 1000 Lumens All-In One Solar Powered Garden & Street Light, which offers the same powerful lighting, but has the convenience of being an all-in-one solution that features solar panels that are connected to the lamp itself. Also offering 1000 lumens of light but with an extra option for controlling the unit is the Remote Control Solar PIR Security Light, which (as the name suggests) comes with a remote control which can be used from the safety of your own home.

These three models are all excellent solutions for adding extra security to your property without damaging the environment or increasing your monthly finances. However, there are other options if you’re looking for something a bit different from your solar security lights. The 100 Lumen Cup Design Solar Garden Light set for 6 lets you opt for more stylish lighting around your garden for night time illumination while keeping it more secure.

There are also other styles available if you’re looking for security lighting that fits a certain look on your property, including lights that have a popular European style, like the European-style Solar Garden Light which has 200 lumens in brightness and adds an authentic vintage street lamp feel to your home, while again being solar powered so it won’t be harmful to the earth.

Any of these high quality Deelat lights will help add to both the look and feel of your garden, while also providing the peace of mind that any home-owner needs.

Backyard Maintenance Tips

The kids are back in school and summer will soon be over. The end of summer means cooler weather which can wreak havoc on your backyard. If you want to keep your yard beautiful for the next spring season, there are a few steps you can take to make that happen.

Fall

1.) Clean up all leaves before the first snowfall. If you have a mulch mower, you can also turn them into clippings for fertilization. Leaving tree leaves on the ground in your backyard can suffocate the grass resulting in bare spots.

2.) Pull up your annuals and use pruning shears to cut back older or decaying branches from your perennials in preparation of the winter season. You should also mulch the soil around the plants with either hay, straw or peat moss to protect them from ice and freezing. Continue to water these plants when there is a lack of rain or snowfall.

3.) Kill weeds like dandelions and clovers in the yard with a herbicide.

4.) Aerate the lawn and if rain is lacking, water it as needed. Be sure however not to over water.

5.) Apply a dry fertilizer to your lawn and lay grass seed to fill in sparse areas or dead patches in the yard.

6.) Once the cold weather hits, wrap tree trunks and your shrubs to protect them from the bright and potentially dangerous winter sun. It should remain there until early spring.

Before the end of the season, give your grass a final cut with your mower on a slightly lower setting than normal.  This length of grass will do well under the snow.
