Tips to Prepare for an All Day Hike

When the weather is great (or even when it’s not so great), a hike into the countryside is a perfect way to find peace, relaxation and a taste of the natural world. It’s also excellent exercise, burning lots of calories while filling your lungs with fresh air.

And, the best part of all, it’s fun, but only if you’re well prepared for what you might need during your trip, otherwise it can turn into a nightmare. First time hikers can end up without the proper clothing, or even underestimate the appropriate amount of food and water to take with them.

Even experienced hikers can forget to prepare properly sometimes, but that doesn’t have to be you. Here are some useful tips to prepare for all day hike!

Select Your Hike Carefully

This is particularly essential if it is your first time, but for any level of hiker, you need to do your research before heading straight into the wild. You must know what your route is, how long it should take and where any potential risks are, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for the possibility of getting stranded and having more trouble rather than fun on your agenda.

It’s easier than ever to do this research now that the internet has given us sites that map popular routes with all kinds of guidance from experts to help you along. Just remember that the wilderness might not have great cell phone reception, so don’t rely on it to get you out of danger if you don’t have a physical map with you. Deelat also offers GPS watches that can pinpoint your location in the event of getting lost. The watches are waterproof and are powered using a rechargeable battery.

Check The Weather

You can rarely be 100% confident that the weather won’t change dramatically, particularly if your hike is taking you to a higher elevation into the clouds, but you can at least make sure beforehand that your hike isn’t going to be taking place in 100mph winds and torrential rain for the entire day. If that’s what the forecast says, make sure that you’re prepared and know how much time you plan to spend on your route.

Be Ready For An Emergency

Hiking done right shouldn’t be a dangerous activity, but things can go wrong for anyone at any time. So it’s not a sign of weakness or lack of confidence to take a first aid kit with you, it’s a necessity and you’d be irresponsible not to.

If anything does happen, you might need more than just a first aid kit to be rescued, but that kit could be the difference between an accident and a tragedy. At the very least it will help you clean up any scratches and scrapes that occur after scrambling or sliding over rocks.

Another useful thing to have with you is some high visibility clothing that you can wear if you happen to get stranded somewhere, to help rescuers find you when it starts going dark.

Take Food!

There won’t be an Arby’s halfway up the mountain or out in the desert, so if you are going on an all-day hike, you’ll need some food to eat, both at lunch time and throughout the day to help replenish any lost energy. Film-wrapped sandwiches are always a good choice. You can also fill tupperware storage boxes and insulated transport bags with whatever you need, in order to keep you going.

Tips to Prepare Yourself for a Camping Trip

Camping trips have been a part of our culture all the way back to when we first started living in built-up towns and cities while losing our connection to the wild. The chance to get away from the rat race and live a more simple life for a while certainly has a strong appeal and there’s plenty of great areas you can go and explore in the wilderness, or even in some less busy green spaces near your city.

However, there’s living a rough camping style for fun on your vacation and then there’s getting all the way out there only to find that you’re missing all the essential items without a convenience store nearby to get them. So here’s some tips for what you need to do to prepare for an upcoming camping trip:

Get The Right Tent

This one is a given, right? Unless you’re going in a caravan (ie, cheating) or are staying somewhere that provides you with a tent, you need to take yours with you and have to make sure it’s going to do the job. You need to think about where you’re going, what kind of terrain there will be, what kind of weather you’re expecting and – of course – how many of you there will be. Tents come in all shapes, sizes and levels of sophistication, so choose wisely.

Let There Be Lights

If you’re camping out in the real wilderness, you may be horrified to discover that there aren’t any street lights out there, and the moon is only going to light your way on clear nights. Traditionally you’d take a torch with you, but trying to read a book under torchlight can be a nuisance, so why not take some simple outdoor lights with you? If you’re going somewhere with reliable sunshine during the day, the best option would be solar powered lights so you don’t need to think about powering them.

Control The Pests

One thing urban folks always notice when they’re in the wild on a camping trip is just how rough and wild it can actually get out there. Bugs and other pests can really spoil your fun as nobody likes to get bitten while they’re sleeping, so make sure you take some form of pest control likes zappers and traps to keep your camp bug-free.

Be Ready For Emergencies

When you’re out in the wilderness, there’s lots of things that can go wrong and it’s not easy to get medical attention quickly, so it’s absolutely essential to make sure you take a first aid kit that will supply you with everything you need to deal with for most injuries. Not taking one of these on a camping trip is dangerous and irresponsible, so don’t be that person.

Take Food Storage

A camping trip is more than just a picnic, but you still need to take something with you to allow you to store food safely and keep it at a good temperature. Insulated transport bags, food storage boxes, cooler boxes and film wrappers will all help you make sure you have the food you need.

Where will you sleep? If using a tent, make sure you have everything you’ll need for assembly. This includes tent stakes, a hammer and a broom for keeping the tent free of debris. Consider a tarp for added protection during the rainy season.

Next, gather your sleeping bags, pillows and/or air mattresses. If taking an air mattress, make sure you have an air pump as well.

What will you eat? Start by packing cooking equipment and utensils such as a camping stove, pots, pans, spatulas, tongs, can openers and oven mitts.

You’ll also need dishes to eat on. For convenience, it makes sense to pack paper plates, cups and plastic silverware. Remember to include trash bags, dish towels and dish washing liquid for clean-up.

Buy and pack food that you will prepare on your camping trip. Don’t forget snacks and food favorites. More importantly, be sure to bring lots of water. Store everything in a cooler with ice to protect against spoilage.

Finally, pack clothing and personal items like deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes. If you plan to go swimming be sure to pack swimwear and a beach towel.
