Tips to Prepare Yourself for a Camping Trip

Camping trips have been a part of our culture all the way back to when we first started living in built-up towns and cities while losing our connection to the wild. The chance to get away from the rat race and live a more simple life for a while certainly has a strong appeal and there’s plenty of great areas you can go and explore in the wilderness, or even in some less busy green spaces near your city.

However, there’s living a rough camping style for fun on your vacation and then there’s getting all the way out there only to find that you’re missing all the essential items without a convenience store nearby to get them. So here’s some tips for what you need to do to prepare for an upcoming camping trip:

Get The Right Tent

This one is a given, right? Unless you’re going in a caravan (ie, cheating) or are staying somewhere that provides you with a tent, you need to take yours with you and have to make sure it’s going to do the job. You need to think about where you’re going, what kind of terrain there will be, what kind of weather you’re expecting and – of course – how many of you there will be. Tents come in all shapes, sizes and levels of sophistication, so choose wisely.

Let There Be Lights

If you’re camping out in the real wilderness, you may be horrified to discover that there aren’t any street lights out there, and the moon is only going to light your way on clear nights. Traditionally you’d take a torch with you, but trying to read a book under torchlight can be a nuisance, so why not take some simple outdoor lights with you? If you’re going somewhere with reliable sunshine during the day, the best option would be solar powered lights so you don’t need to think about powering them.

Control The Pests

One thing urban folks always notice when they’re in the wild on a camping trip is just how rough and wild it can actually get out there. Bugs and other pests can really spoil your fun as nobody likes to get bitten while they’re sleeping, so make sure you take some form of pest control likes zappers and traps to keep your camp bug-free.

Be Ready For Emergencies

When you’re out in the wilderness, there’s lots of things that can go wrong and it’s not easy to get medical attention quickly, so it’s absolutely essential to make sure you take a first aid kit that will supply you with everything you need to deal with for most injuries. Not taking one of these on a camping trip is dangerous and irresponsible, so don’t be that person.

Take Food Storage

A camping trip is more than just a picnic, but you still need to take something with you to allow you to store food safely and keep it at a good temperature. Insulated transport bags, food storage boxes, cooler boxes and film wrappers will all help you make sure you have the food you need.

Tips for Spring Vehicle Maintenance

Spring is finally here and it’s time to make sure your vehicle has made it through the frigid winter months! Now is a good time to top up fluids and clean the engine before the long, hot summer days approach. The cold and wet winter weather may have caused wear and tear on the mechanical parts of your cars, bikes, and trucks, etc, which is what makes spring maintenance checks all the more important. Spotting any areas of concern and having them addressed can prevent potentially costly or dangerous problems in the long run.

So here are some top tips for spring vehicle maintenance to get you ready for warmer weather:

Replace Your Wipers

One part of your car that bears the brunt of the winter weather is your windshield wipers. They get little use in the summer months (hopefully) but are called into action so often during the rain, sleet and snow. Even when it’s dry you can rely on them to wipe away the grit and grime. They generally need replacing every six months or so, but certainly need to be ditched if they’re showing signs of wear and tear. If you can’t clean your windshield, you won’t be able to see properly, and there isn’t anything more important when it comes to driving than that.

Check Your Lights & Mirrors

The arrival of spring means longer days and shorter nights, but it doesn’t mean you’ll never be driving in the dark, so you need to make sure your lights are working properly. The headlights and brake light bulbs will have been used a lot over winter, so they could be close to burning out or may have have already gone. If you need to replace them, make sure you know what type of bulb fits your model of vehicle before you buy any, otherwise you’ll end up wasting money for nothing. When it comes to your mirrors, unless you’ve kept them properly clean over winter, they could need replacing too.

Don’t Forget The Interior

When doing maintenance, it’s important to remember the inside of the vehicle too, which will have taken a beating not from the weather but from the muck, gravel and dirt that you may have brought in each time you used it. So it’s a good opportunity for some spring cleaning, and new brushes to take care of your seats, a wax spray (which will also help with the exterior of your vehicle) for the surfaces and some new floor mats will give you that new car feel all over again. Also if your vehicle has become a bit cluttered over the last few months, why not treat yourself to a storage organizer to help keep everything in its rightful place?
