Summer is here and so are those unbearably hot weather days. On hotter days, you’ll need to have a plan in place for cooling your home or business. This is especially important in warmer climates where the heat is more persistent.

Besides investing in an HVAC system, there are several other methods you can use to keep the heat out and the cooler temperatures flowing.

Follow these 9 steps to feel more comfortable.

1.) Start by keeping sun light out using blackout curtains, shades or blinds.

2.) Install a ceiling fan if you don’t have one. Ceiling fans will lower the temperature of any room and will make a great addition to your air conditioning system.

3.) If you have a ceiling fan, ensure it works properly. In the summer months it should rotate counterclockwise as opposed to clockwise in the winter months.

4.) Keep doors closed to prevent warmer air from flowing in.

5.) Close the doors of rooms or offices that you don’t use to keep the cooler air in more frequented areas.

6.) Run appliances such as washers and dryers at night.

7.) When cooking, be sure to turn on the exhaust fan to quickly get rid of unwanted heat.

8.) Turn off lights when not in use.

9.) Use portable ventilators or misting fans inside industrial or manufacturing environments.

If you are willing to make the investment, there are more permanent changes or improvements that you can make to your home or office to prevent over heating and allow for greater air flow. This includes:

• Added insulation.

• Minimize heat from the sun by adding trees to your landscaping or installing awnings around large windows.

• Install a dehumidifier to rid your home or office of extra moisture.

• Switch to energy efficient or LED lighting.

• Install a cool or reflective roof.
