Tips to help your Business Stay Cool during the Warmer Months

Creating a pleasant working environment for staff has become ever more important in the last few decades as we’ve learned more about what influences productivity along with an increase in job mobility seeing workers more likely to leave their employers if they aren’t happy with conditions. This particularly applies when the weather is hot during the summer months, as oppressive heat can drain energy levels and cause a great deal of discomfort. However as an employer, there’s plenty you can do to help.

Nobody likes being inside at work on a sunny day, but if the temperature is so high that even office workers are struggling to get their jobs done, that isn’t good for anybody, and this is even more critical in workplaces where employees need to be up and about all day. So here are some tips for helping your business stay cool during the warmer months:

Summer cooling 1

Invest in Air Conditioning

If your workplace is in a town or city where the climate is generally very hot during the summer months, you should already have air conditioning, but even in more temperate locations it can be a necessity to have a system in place for when the thermometer soars. In these situations, rather than paying for a full installation, it might be more efficient and convenient (and cost-effective) to buy a portable air conditioning unit which can be used when required.

Buy an Air Curtain

If you work somewhere that requires a door to be open to allow in customers or loading vehicles, it can be hard to regulate the indoor temperature without being affected by the outside atmosphere. This applies equally whether it’s hot or cold, so an air curtain is needed to offer a barrier between the two temperatures that will prevent the hot air (in this instance) from replacing the air conditioned air.

Fans – Lots of Fans

One of the cheapest options for your business might be the simplest one – buy lots of fans. If air conditioning isn’t something that you are going to need on a regular basis, simply making sure your workplace has enough fans to offer a cool draft to make the heat less of a problem for all of your staff could be the way forward. There are fans of all shapes and sizes to fit your needs, including some industrial-sized blowers if required.

Stay Hydrated

And finally, the cheapest tip of them all. When the weather is hot, your staff will get dehydrated quickly, especially those having to be on their feet all day. Using the methods above to reduce the temperature will help, but even office workers need to stay hydrated during the summer, so why not supply them with not only a drinking fountain or cooler, but water bottles as well that they can be refilled whenever necessary.

Keep Your Home or Business Cool with HVAC Products

Summer is here and so are those unbearably hot weather days. On hotter days, you’ll need to have a plan in place for cooling your home or business. This is especially important in warmer climates where the heat is more persistent.

Besides investing in an HVAC system, there are several other methods you can use to keep the heat out and the cooler temperatures flowing.

Follow these 9 steps to feel more comfortable.

1.) Start by keeping sun light out using blackout curtains, shades or blinds.

2.) Install a ceiling fan if you don’t have one. Ceiling fans will lower the temperature of any room and will make a great addition to your air conditioning system.

3.) If you have a ceiling fan, ensure it works properly. In the summer months it should rotate counterclockwise as opposed to clockwise in the winter months.

4.) Keep doors closed to prevent warmer air from flowing in.

5.) Close the doors of rooms or offices that you don’t use to keep the cooler air in more frequented areas.

6.) Run appliances such as washers and dryers at night.

7.) When cooking, be sure to turn on the exhaust fan to quickly get rid of unwanted heat.

8.) Turn off lights when not in use.

9.) Use portable ventilators or misting fans inside industrial or manufacturing environments.

If you are willing to make the investment, there are more permanent changes or improvements that you can make to your home or office to prevent over heating and allow for greater air flow. This includes:

  • Added insulation.
  • Minimize heat from the sun by adding trees to your landscaping or installing awnings around large windows.
  • Install a dehumidifier to rid your home or office of extra moisture.
  • Install a cool or reflective roof.

How to Choose a Misting Fan for Home or Office

In warm climates, misting fans are an ideal solution for escaping the heat. Here’s why: Not only does a misting fan create cool air, it also creates a cool cloud of water vapor that’s pushed out along with the air. The result is an immense cooling effect. In fact, misting fans can lower ambient temperatures by has much as 50° F.

For consumers, there are a range of options for in-home misting fans. Many look similar to standard fans and might feature either a pedestal or box fan build. But misting fans also contain a reservoir for water, up to 10 gallons or more, as well as a nozzle system attached to the fan’s cage. Overall, they’re extremely easy to use and they can be used inside or out to cool off you and your guests.

So what do you need to consider when buying a misting fan? Here are a few features and specifications to look for:

  • Build Quality: You should look at two areas when considering the build quality. First, look at the fan head and blade. All-metal options are the most durable, and they’re ideally suited for outdoor use, while plastic offers a more cost-effective solution but might not last as long. Additionally, you should consider the motor. A misting fan’s motor should be powerful, and built from high-quality materials.

  • Power: In general, the more power the fan’s motor has, the cooler it can make an environment. For fans that will be primarily used outdoors, choose a misting fan with substantial power of at least 200+ Watts. You should also consider the area that the fan is designed to cool. More powerful fans can cool larger areas, so if you plan to cool a garage or deck, choose a fan that has enough power.
  • Cooling Effect:  Misting fans are typically rated for their overall cooling capacity. In general, the range is about 2-10° C, which is 35-50° F. This cooling effect will be limited in outdoor environments, as the cool air will dissipate. But the measure is fairly accurate in indoor spaces.
  • Water Capacity: A misting fan’s tank may range from 2 gallons up to 10 gallons or more, which is about 40 liters. The advantage of a larger capacity misting fan: You will have to fill it up less frequently. But with more water in the tank, the fan will be less portable.
  • Flow Rate: Flow rate is the speed at which air moves from the fan. In the U.S. this rate is measured in CFM. Typically, in average sized interior spaces, 700 CFM should suffice, which is about 20 m3/minute. Yet, there are many options that have much greater flow rates, up to 200 m3/m or more. A fan with a larger flow rate will produce a greater stream of cooler air and be more effective at cooling.

Explosion-Proof Ventilation Fans: Applications and Common Uses

An explosion-proof ventilation fan, or hazardous location fan, is a widely used piece of equipment in industrial facilities and on construction sites. These specially designed fans provide proper ventilation for spaces where flammable gases, vapors, or dusts may be present. Explosion-proof ventilation fans are designed to be non-sparking, which minimizes the risk for sparks that could ignite potentially flammable materials. That means the entire fan is constructed with non-sparking materials, including an explosion-proof motor and aluminum or copper fan blades.

These fans have practical uses. For instance, if you were working in an environment with flammable gases, if the fan were to tip over and hit against another metal object, a spark would very likely be emitted. In the most at-risk locations, one spark is all it takes to cause an explosion. Hazardous location ventilation equipment is designed to reduce the risk for these sorts of accidents.

Locations That Require Hazardous Location Fans

A range of construction and industrial locations require the use of explosion-proof ventilation fans, and different types of ventilators should be used based on the facility’s explosion risk. For instance, woodworking facilities pose one of the greatest risks for explosion and fire. These facilities, in turn, require the safest equipment available.

There’s a complex classification for these fans, and they’re categorized into three class types that represent the risk factor for an explosion of a type of material. Materials with low ignition points pose the biggest threat, and are thus, grouped into Class III.

Class I facilities include dry cleaning plants, paint spray booths, and oil refineries, which are facilities in which the materials have high ignition points. Examples of Class II facilities include grain elevators, food powder processing plants, i.e. flour, sugar and cocoa, and fireworks manufacturing facilities. The risk for explosion in these facilities is greater, and the materials have lower ignition points. Finally, facilities with the highest risk are placed in Class III, include locations like woodworking facilities, cotton production plants, and textile mills.

Understanding Fan Rating System

Each explosive-proof fan is marked with a specific code that provides vital safety information. When selecting a ventilation fan, refer to the fans safety code. Higher-risk workspaces require fans that meet safer standards, and using the wrong type of fan can be potentially hazardous.

These codes contain four pieces of information: The classification standard (either Canadian or American), the protection concept code, the gas group, and the temperature code. A typical marking would look something like this:

Ex t IIB T4

“Ex” means Explosion Protection, and it is the Canadian standard for explosion-proof electronics. Alternatively, the American code is “AEx”. In addition, the “t” refers to the protection concept code, the “IIB” would be the gas group, and “T4” is the temperature code. These help differentiate the type of fan, and the safeguards against the material that is being handled.

There are four gas groups: I, IIA, IIB, and IIC. IIC is the gas group that poses the greatest risk for explosion or fire, and includes vapors like Hydrogen and acetylene. Fans that are marked IIC are suitable for IIB, IIA and I gas group environments.
