Tips to Prepare for a Summer Road Trip

If you have children, you may find it expensive and even difficult to use air travel. So, to get to your chosen destination, driving may be the best suitable option. Road trips can also provide an opportunity to enjoy and spend some time with family and friends. Before you hit the road however, there are some steps that you should take to ensure you are prepared.

Road-trip

  • Plan and pack activities for the kids. Some ideas include DVD’s (if you have a player), reading or coloring books, magazines, handheld games or puzzles such as word search.
  • Don’t forget to pack snacks including bottled water. This will keep you from having to make so many stops.
  • Plan your route and print it out in advance as a backup. Even though you may have GPS, remember in some areas you may have no or poor connections.
  • If you have time, plan your trip around sightseeing. For example, plan your stops for gas or lunch in cities where you can stop and see landmarks or other attractions.
  • Be sure to pack an emergency first aid kit. This kit should include a pain killer, band aids, an antiseptic and stomach medication such as Pepto Bismol.
  • Don’t forget cords and chargers for electronics.
  • Are pills and other medications packed? Double check before leaving.
  • Finally, make sure you have copies of documents that you might need. This includes passports (if needed) and health/contact information in case of emergency.

More importantly however, you’ll want to make sure the car is in tip-top shape for your trip. Complete the below checklist and you’ll be set:

  • Get your oil changed if you haven’t done that in a while.
  • Top off all other fluids in the car as well. This includes brake fluid, transmission fluid and coolant. Don’t forget windshield washer fluid too as you never know what type of weather you might run in to.
  • Inspect your tires for damage. Be sure to also inflate your tires to the proper PSI before leaving. Bring along a hydraulic service jack, in case you should encounter any tire issues.
  • Ensure that all of your vehicle lights are working. Check brake lights, turn signals and interior lighting for late night driving.
  • Store items in your trunk in case of emergency. This should include a spare tire, flashlight and tools, along with jumper cables.

Choosing the Best Lighting for Your Home or Office Space

There are so many options for lighting your home or office on the market today. How do you know what type of lighting will work best for you? Follow this simple checklist to decide what type of light bulbs to purchase, in order to provide your space with the most suitable and comfortable lighting possible.

Home Spaces:

Having so many light bulb options can be confusing. When selecting a light bulb, should you choose an LED or CFL light bulb? And what light color should you use?

  • Choose an LED light bulb for workshops and home offices as the CFL often gives in to power surges.
  • Opt for a CFL when choosing light bulbs for lamps as the LED is strictly directional.
  • CFL bulbs contain some mercury which can be hazardous if broken. If this is a concern, you may want to go with the LED light bulb instead.
  • Now that you’ve decided between the LED and CFL, you’ll need to choose a light color. To make this decision, you’ll need to determine what you will be using the space for? For example, you’ll want softer (or lower temperature) lighting in a bedroom but will need a more natural white (or medium temperature) for an office or living space. Higher temperature or daylight bulbs should be reserved for sitting rooms or libraries where lots of reading is common.
  • LED light bulbs are more expensive than CFL bulbs but offer a longer lifespan thus making them a good investment.

Office Spaces:

Traditional linear fluorescent lights are the most common option for office lighting. These have proved to be the most popular because they provide good lighting, are cost effective, offer a long life span and are also energy savers. So when, if ever, should you consider making a switch to LED lighting?

  • If you are concerned about safety and the environment, you’ll want to switch to LED lighting. First off, fluorescent lights contain a small trace of mercury. Consequently, these lights are not viewed as environmentally friendly and are difficult to safely dispose of. They also give off some ultraviolet light which can pose as a health hazard for some.
  • Opt for LED lights if you need shatterproof lighting.
  • If you have the need to adjust your lights, that is to dim or brighten them at times, this is not possible with fluorescent lights. However, controls are suitable for use with LED lighting.
  • There are other benefits to consider when deciding to make the switch from fluorescent to LED lighting in your office space. Along with offering a longer lifespan and better efficiency, flickering and buzzing is not a problem with LED lights – a common problem with compact fluorescent bulbs.

Keep Your Home or Business Cool with HVAC Products

Summer is here and so are those unbearably hot weather days. On hotter days, you’ll need to have a plan in place for cooling your home or business. This is especially important in warmer climates where the heat is more persistent.

Besides investing in an HVAC system, there are several other methods you can use to keep the heat out and the cooler temperatures flowing.

Follow these 9 steps to feel more comfortable.

1.) Start by keeping sun light out using blackout curtains, shades or blinds.

2.) Install a ceiling fan if you don’t have one. Ceiling fans will lower the temperature of any room and will make a great addition to your air conditioning system.

3.) If you have a ceiling fan, ensure it works properly. In the summer months it should rotate counterclockwise as opposed to clockwise in the winter months.

4.) Keep doors closed to prevent warmer air from flowing in.

5.) Close the doors of rooms or offices that you don’t use to keep the cooler air in more frequented areas.

6.) Run appliances such as washers and dryers at night.

7.) When cooking, be sure to turn on the exhaust fan to quickly get rid of unwanted heat.

8.) Turn off lights when not in use.

9.) Use portable ventilators or misting fans inside industrial or manufacturing environments.

If you are willing to make the investment, there are more permanent changes or improvements that you can make to your home or office to prevent over heating and allow for greater air flow. This includes:

  • Added insulation.
  • Minimize heat from the sun by adding trees to your landscaping or installing awnings around large windows.
  • Install a dehumidifier to rid your home or office of extra moisture.
  • Install a cool or reflective roof.

Storage Tips for Downsizing

Today, many are concerned about their carbon footprint as it pertains to the environment. For this reason, many are choosing to move into smaller homes or office spaces. In fact, tiny houses are all the rave in today’s real estate market.

Although this is a commendable act, storage can be a problem when downsizing.  However, there are many clever and innovate ways you can create added storage space. Consider the following when preparing to downsize to a smaller home or office.

  • Under Bed Storage – Elevate your bed so that you can store bins or baskets underneath. This is a great place for extra bedding such as blankets, pillows and sheets.
  • Bench Storage – Place a trunk or storage bench at the foot of your bed. Along with added seating, it will also provide you with additional storage for clothing or other items.
  • Vertical/Open Cabinets and Shelves – Why open? When you opt for open cabinets or shelves, you can make better use of bins or drawers. Both attractive and functional, along with helping to organize, they can also add color and enhance the style of your space. Build cabinets as high as possible in your kitchen and bath. Store rarely used items high and out of reach.
  • Added Kitchen Storage – Attach file folders to the sides of cabinets or on the kitchen wall to store large utensils, foil or wax paper for easy access.
  • Added Bathroom Storage – In lieu of a mirror, place a cabinet or shelf over the sink. You can also get added storage with an over the toilet shelving unit or medicine cabinet.
  • Safe boxes – organize and store personal documents and valuables using a durable electric lock safe.

Often, your home must also serve as an office space. This will require lots of creativity and innovative design ideas. Most importantly, your furniture pieces will need to be multi-functional. For example, your dining table can serve as a desk and a trunk as both a coffee table and storage unit.
