Projector Screen Buyers Guide: Considerations When Buying A Projection Screen

Owning a home theater projector or a multimedia projector can transform the way you view movies or present images and slides in the boardroom. Yet, one component that’s often forgotten: The projector screen.

Many people choose to use a white wall or sheet for a projection screen. Sometimes, this method works; a white wall can be used as a surface for projecting images. Yet, dedicated fixed or retracting projection screens provide something more, because they are designed to display image and video.

If you’re considering purchasing a projector screen, you probably have a range of questions. Fortunately, choosing a projection screen comes down to a few factors: Size and shape, material and the style are what you’ll need to think about.

Fixed or Retractable?

Fixed screens are either framed or mounted to the wall, and they stay in a fixed position. The screen doesn’t fold or retract. The other option is a retractable screen. These are often mounted to the ceiling or wall, and the screen can then be pulled down or when in use. After use, it rolls back into the housing. There are manual and motorized retractable screens available.

So which is right for you? Fixed projection screens are more affordable, and they tend to look like picture frames. In addition, these types of screens are generally mounted to the wall, or they have legs to support the frame and can stand in the front of the classroom or in a home theater. The biggest advantage: The cost and their portability. Plus, they are super easy to put together. But they are more difficult to store, as they aren’t designed to fold down.

Retractable projector screens, on the other hand, are sleeker and they’re the ideal option for classrooms. The screen must be stowed so that a whiteboard behind can be seen. On the downfalls, these screens are more expensive and they require more intensive installation.

What Size Screen Do I Need?

Typically, the most popular screens measure about 100-120 inches diagonally. The size you choose depends on a variety of factors. First, the space you have available. Secondly, you’ll want to consider the projector that you are using. Images become dimmer the larger they are. So depending on the light output of the projector, image quality may decrease as it gets larger if the projector doesn’t have a high lumen output. In these cases, a smaller screen would be better, as there wouldn’t be nearly as much empty space around the image.

What Shape Should the Projector Be?

Another size factor is the shape of the screen. There are, typically, three common types, although there are a range of options. These shapes are related to the image’s aspect ratio. Options include:

  • 16:9 – This provides a more widescreen image, and it’s typically used for home movie projection. Choose this shape if you’ll be using a projector with native 16:9 resolution.
  • 4:3 – The 4:3 aspect ratio is squarer in shape. It is four units horizontal compared to three units vertically. This is typically used for TV and multimedia projection. This is standard computer aspect ratio, and it’s ideal for SVGA, XGA, and WXGA resolutions.
  • 1:1 – The 1:1 aspect ratio is a perfect square. This is used primarily for classroom and boardroom multimedia projections. It is used primarily for overhead projectors.

Choose a screen shape that matches the native aspect ratio of your projector. Often, projectors are adaptable, but matching aspect ratios of the screen and projector will provide the best results.

What Type of Fabric Should I Choose?

Projector screens are made from a variety of materials, and there are a range of color options as well. Typically, white is best, particularly for low-lit spaces. Black and silver screens are typically used in more moderately lit rooms, but they aren’t always necessary. You should also look at fabric:

  • PVC — In general, PVC screen tend to reflect more light than fiber glass screens. The disadvantage is that light is diffused less evenly, and thus, as you move further back from the screen, the image brightness can drop off faster.
  • Fiber Glass – Fiber glass screens tend to distribute light more evenly. So although the light isn’t reflected as intensely, the image tends to stay brighter from greater distances.

How to Buy a Portable Gas Generator

Gas-powered generators are a common piece of equipment at remote job sites. Plus, many homeowners have generators on hand to prepare for a power outage. These small, portable generators are powered by gas motors, delivering wattage to power electronics, power tools and home appliances.

Yet, you need to match the generator’s capacity and wattage to your needs. For example, if you need to provide power to an entire multi-room home, a small generator wouldn’t be the best option. And if you need a power source at the job site for a circular saw, a mega-wattage generator would be more costly and deliver way more power than what’s needed.

So how do you select a gas generator for your needs?

Gas Generator Buyers Guide: Questions to Ask

How Much Wattage Do I Need?

Whether you’ll be using the generator to power equipment at the job site, or as a backup power source if your home’s power fails, you need to select a generator with the proper wattage output.  Home refrigerators, for example, have a running wattage of about 600 watts and a surge wattage of 2,000+ watts. And a circular saw has an average running wattage of about 1,500 watts and surge wattage of about 3,000. That means to start up a circular saw, you will need a generator that can support up to 3,000 watts.

What is the generator’s capacity?

Gas generators are powered by motors that use gasoline. The capacity is the volume of the gas motor’s tank, as well as the maximum amount of time that the motor will run. If you need a generator that will run continuously for long periods of time – for instance, as your home’s backup power – a larger volume tank is more ideal. Portable generators for the job site tend to have gas motors that can run for a max of 6-8 hours.

What features and items do you need?

There are a range of things to consider in terms of features and included items. For example, you might need additional items like:

  • Power cord
  • Oil
  • Wheels
  • A cover

Be sure that you know what’s included in-box with the generator you purchase. Special features include automatic idle, automatic safety shutdown, spark mufflers, liquid cooling and electronic start. Depending on the application, you may need a specialized gas generator. For example, worksites that have greater fire dangers often require generators with spark muffling and fire-prevention features.

How portable does the generator need to be?

Small, medium and large gas generators tend to come in a variety of configurations. Often, they have wheels that make the generator easy to move around to different pieces of equipment. Others are fixed, and they’re designed to be set up in one position. Be sure to select a generator that is portable if you’ll need a power source at different locations throughout the day.

Do you need a transfer switch?

A transfer switch is a piece of hardware that connects to your home’s switch box, and transfers the power from the main supply to the generator. This is needed for home energy gas generators.

Buying a Circular Saw Blade for Aluminum or Plastic Cutting: Types and Things to Consider

Circular saw blades are used on a range of tools, including miter saws, radial saws, cut-off saws, table saws, as well as standard circular saws. Yet not all blades are created equal. Some are designed for quickly chopping wood, while others are built to deliver finer cuts on metal or plastic.

Circular Saw Blade

It’s important to choose the proper blade, and that means first choosing a blade that fits the saw you will be using. And secondly, choosing a blade that’s suited for the application you will be using it for. Using a blade with fewer teeth, for example, can damage materials like laminate or acrylic. And smaller blades require saws with faster RPMs; if you use a small blade on a large saw, the blade will not receive enough power.

So what do you need to consider? There are a number of factors to think about, but start by finding out what size the blade needs to be. Consult the owner’s manual of your saw to determine the size. This will provide you with three measurements:

  • Blade Diameter
  • Arbor Size
  • Kerf

Blade diameter and arbor size are determined by the saw. Standard circular saws, for instance, most commonly accommodate a 7-1/4-inch diameter blade, while table and miter saws frequently require 10- or 12-inch diameter blades. Each saw is different, and the wrong sized blade can cause a number of problems.

Additionally, kerf is the thickness of the blade. Typically circular saws can accommodate a variety of thicknesses, and you may want to select a blade with a different kerf for several reasons. Thinner kerf blades are sharper, move faster and remove less material with each cut. This is useful when thin, delicate material is being cut. Thicker kerf blades, on the other hand, remove more material; they’re better for thick wood.

Choosing a Circular Saw Blade for Your Application

Once you know the proper size, you can begin to determine the type of blade that you will need. Here’s another measure you will need to know: The number of teeth on the blade. Most commonly blades range from 24 to 80 teeth, and it’s just as important to choose a blade with the proper number of teeth.

Circular Saw Blade Teeth
Circular Saw Blade Teeth

Here’s why: A blade with more teeth makes cleaner cuts, while blades with fewer teeth make faster cuts with rough edges. Blades that have fewer teeth are commonly used to cut wood. But these blades don’t work particularly well with aluminum. For example, a laminate that’s finished with aluminum oxide will likely chip if a blade with less teeth is used, and the blade will become dull faster because the material is harder.

Aluminum circular saw blades and plastic blades typically have more teeth. In general, aluminum and plastic blades have between 40-80 teeth, depending on the type of metal or plastic. Plastics that are prone to heat damage, though, may require a low friction blade with fewer teeth to reduce the heat that’s created during the cut.

LED Roadside Warning Lights: Useful for Traffic Safety at Night and Day

Road flares have traditionally been used for lighting roadways during emergencies. Yet, there’s a more economical, reusable option: LED warning lights. These flashing lights, which are equipped with highly visible multi-colored displays, provide precautionary lighting in a variety of situations, at night or during the day.

For example, LED road flares can be used for drivers of stalled vehicles, helping to warn and slow oncoming traffic. LED roadside warning lights are also used by emergency responders to clearly mark accidents, slow traffic for parades and events, or mark hazards in the road like fallen tree limbs. Proper lighting is critical to roadside safety, and LED lights offer several advantages over traditional flame road flares.

Usefulness of LED Road Flares

There are a number of reasons LED emergency lights are a must-have item in any vehicle. In addition to being weatherproof, these emergency lights do not emit flames and they are reusable. Additional advantages include:

  • Bright Multi-Colored Display: LED road flares are designed with dozens of bulbs that emit high-intensity light. That means they’re visible in both day and night. Plus, unlike road flares, LED lights stand vertically, increasing their visibility, and they use multiple colors. For example, our roadside emergency light contains a red caution triangle with orange and white accents, which quickly informs drivers to slow down.

  • Blinking LED Display: In addition to being vertically oriented, LED road lights are also programmed to flash, which increases nighttime visibility. The blinking lights at night help to illuminate and clearly mark accidents and slow traffic.
  • Day/Night Visibility: LEDs are bright, intense lights, and they are noticeable during day and night. In addition, the vertical stand increases noticeability at any time of the day.
  • Ease-of-Use: LED road light are extremely easy to use, and they don’t require safe handling to operate, unlike road flares. For example, if a road flare is run over by a vehicle, it can become airborne, causing potential injury. LED emergency lights, on the other hand, are battery powered, and require a quick flip of the switch.
  • Weatherproof: Our LED emergency lights are weatherproof, which makes them useful in any condition, from strong rain to heavy snow.

Uric Acid and Blood Glucose Meters: How They Work, Types and Reading Results

Home uric acid testing kits can provide users with accurate information quickly about uric acid, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. They are used primarily by patients that need to regularly test those levels, including people suffering from gout and diabetics.

Uric Acid Meter

Many testing kits are capable of measuring many different types of blood data. For instance, uric acid testers typically also meter blood glucose and some also include the ability to measure cholesterol. There are two main types of testing kits for uric acid and blood glucose: Urine test strips and blood meters.

Urine test strips are more convenient, yet the data is not as precise. Blood uric acid testing kits, on the other hand, require to the user to draw a small sample of blood, usually generated with a pin prick to the finger. Then, a replaceable testing strip that attaches to the digital reading device is placed into the blood. This method for testing provides much more accurate data. For example, blood glucose urine strips require the blood glucose level to be above 180 mg/dl for blood glucose to be detected, which is already above normal levels.

Home kits can be used by users to:

  • Monitor symptoms of gout and diabetes
  • Ensure proper kidney function following injury
  • Help determine the cause of kidney stones

If your results appear abnormal, you should consult with your doctor to determine the course of treatment.

Reading Results: Consult With Your Doctor

Each person has unique needs when it comes to uric acid testing. However, home kits are not suitable for every patient. Some require testing to be conducted by a physician for the most accurate results, while others may use home testing kits to ensure levels are within range.

  • Reading Uric Acid Levels: Typically, normal uric acid levels in the blood are 3.5 to 7.2 mg/dl, according to Healthline.com. Low levels are not as common as higher levels of uric acid, and levels below normal may not be as serious as higher levels. Consult with your physician if you experience levels below the normal level. The digital readout of the uric acid meter will provide a measure of your level in mg/dl.
  • Reading Blood Glucose Levels: Blood glucose is a measure of sugar in the blood, and it is also measured in mg/dl. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, a random test should result in a maximum blood glucose level of 125 mg/dl. But tests do depend on what you last had to eat. For example, a test following a meal that’s high in sugar will likely spike your blood glucose levels. In fact, if you’ve recently eaten, your level might be as high as 200 mg/dl. Consult with your physician if you experience levels that appear abnormal.
