Tips for using Acoustic Foam for Building a Recording Studio

If you’re looking to set up a recording studio, there are many factors to take into account, but none are quite so obviously significant as acoustics. Put simply, if you don’t get this aspect right, you will most likely find it difficult to achieve high audio recording quality. One of the most important steps to take in acoustic treatment and/or soundproofing your recording space is to use acoustic foam panels.

Here are some tips for how you can use acoustic foam to help build the perfect recording studio:

Know What You Need Before You Start

As with any project, you need to do your research and planning beforehand, right down to knowing exactly what you’re going to be using the room for. This will help determine what you do with the acoustic foam.

Will it be a vocal room or a control room? Both may require different layouts, and will be dependent on what kind of acoustics you want to create. The basic layout of the room has to be taken into account as well; knowing how the sound is reflected around it and where the problem areas are located.

Walk around the room, clapping as loudly as you can and listen to the echos and reverberations. Where you can hear a metallic ringing sound is where you’ll need to focus your acoustic treatment.

Placing Acoustic Foam – The Basics

As previously mentioned, much of this is dependent on the room itself, but there are some basics that you need to take care of. You need to make sure the area behind your studio monitors is covered with acoustic foam as well as open dihedral corners (where two surfaces meet) which should be covered with a curved foam panel to allow an air gap behind it.

You’ll hopefully have an idea of how much of the walls you need to cover after doing the clapping test mentioned above (it can range from covering 20% up to 80% of the wall surface), so the next step will be to affix the panels to the walls either with an adhesive or with clips, depending on how permanent you want the studio to be and if you plan on removing the panels at some point.

Once the foam is placed, you need to test the acoustics to see if you have achieved what you’ve been aiming for. If not, trial and error is the best way to perfect the sound in your new studio. Happy recording!

Deelat.com has a wide selection of acoustic foam paneling made from polyurehane materials. They are full of very small holes inside, which absorb a large amount of incoming sound energy. Easy Kitchen Renovation Ideas

According to realtors, kitchen renovations can add the greatest value to your home. Even the smallest changes can add a substantial profit to your bottom line when you are ready to put your home on the market. Here are a few renovation ideas that will give you the most bang for your buck.

1.) Paint your kitchen walls using a fresh, new color. Some ideas include white, gray, blue or an earthy green.

2.) Refresh your cabinets by replacing the doors. Glass door cabinets will give your kitchen a contemporary flair and a more upscale look.

3.) Change the hardware on your cabinets to update your kitchen’s appearance.

4.) Add a splash of color or a stylish design to your kitchen with a new backsplash.

5.) Upgrade your appliances. Opt for stainless steel as they are most appealing to buyers.

6.) Improve the lighting in your kitchen with recess or track lighting. If your budget is real tight, consider using LED rope lighting above or under your cabinets.

7.) Install new flooring for a more modern look. Resilient or vinyl flooring is also scuff and scratch free making it an excellent investment.

8.) Many older homes tend to have minimal kitchen storage space. Add storage to your kitchen with hanging pot racks, pantry shelves or plate racks.

9.) Opt for open shelving to show off your dish collection. Open shelves will also make your space appear larger.

10.) Replace your old sink with one that is extra-deep to allow for easy washing of large pots and pans.

Improvements in kitchen layout can also prove to be extremely valuable. Think about the workflow needed to easily create a family meal. Make sure the dishwasher, sink and refrigerator are within close proximity of one another. Finally, ensure that you have adequate countertop space for food preparation. If you don’t, consider extending your countertop or adding work space with the installation of an island.

Tips for Carpet Reinstallations

Is it time to replace your carpets? If they are getting dirty, you may be able to give them a good cleaning and get them back to looking like new. However, if your carpets are beginning to show lots of rips and tears, it may be time to replace them.

Instead of hiring a costly installer, you may be able to reinstall the carpets yourself. Here are a few tips and ideas to help you with the process.

1.) Empty the room by removing furniture and other items.

2.) Remove doors, door stops and vent covers.

3.) Prepare the floor – Before laying your new floor, inspect the under floor to make sure it is in good condition. Check for things that may cause your floor to be uneven. A level floor is crucial to a good installation. Next, make sure the floor is clean and free of all debris. It also needs to be dry and free of any staples.

4.) Purchase tools and supplies – Have all of your tools handy and close by. Depending upon the type of carpet you install, you may need the following:

  • Knee kicker (for wall-to-wall)
  • Carpet glue
  • U-notch trowel
  • Carpet tucker
  • Peel and stick carpet tack strip
  • Carpet iron
  • Carpet stretcher
  • Electric carpet stapler
  • Tackless strips

5.) Carpet tiles – Consider using carpet tiles instead of wall-to-wall carpets. Along with them being easier to install, you can also create an artistic, creative pattern for added interest and appeal. When installing them, be sure to:

  • Find the center of the room and begin laying it there.
  • Plan your pattern and pre-lay before adhering them. This will allow you to move them around before placing them permanently.
  • Easy to use, once you have your pattern figured out, simply peel and stick.

6.) Wall-to-Wall Carpet

  • As with carpet tiles, you’ll want to first find the center of the room.
  • Begin installation from the center and work your way outwards.
  • Install tackless strips where needed. Work with old ones if they are in good condition
  • Lay and secure your chosen padding. Simply roll it out and staple. Finally, cut and trim to fit.
  • Pre-lay your carpet and cut to fit. This is a rough cutting so leave extra.
  • In your corners, use your kicker to get your carpet in place. Use your carpet tucker to get an even tighter fit.
  • Trim the carpet using your carpet trimmer.
  • Be sure to take accurate measurements to ensure that you purchase the right amount of carpet and padding.

Home Inspection Tips

Most likely your home will be the biggest purchase you will ever make. So when looking for a house, you’ll want to make sure that it’s a good investment.

Don’t Fall in Love with a House

Before you purchase a house, you’ll want to have it inspected. Therefore, it is important that you avoid making an emotional commitment before you have a professional inspection done and have reviewed the report.

If you choose to make an offer prior to the inspection, be sure to include a contingency clause. That is, your offer is made contingent upon the receipt of a passing inspection report.

HomeInspection

What to Look for in the Inspection

The point of the inspection is to uncover any potential problems. This is especially important with costly repairs in areas of electrical, heating, air conditioning or plumbing. To ensure a thorough examination, some steps you should require in your home inspection include:

  • Examination of the exterior including the roof and foundation.
  • Inspection of the electrical system.
  • Inspection of the heating/air conditioning system.
  • Inspection of the plumbing system.
  • Inspection of the basement as well as each individual room.

Home-Report

What to Look for when Hiring an Inspector

To get a quality inspection, you’ll need to be sure your inspector is qualified. Referrals are the best way to find a good person or agency. Look for inspectors that are members of the American Society of Home Inspectors. You’ll want the home inspector to be both licensed and insured.

Make sure your inspector will issue a detailed, written and signed report within a few days following the inspection.

Be Sure to Attend the Inspection

It can be tempting to skip being around during the time of inspection. However, this is a big mistake. Being present will allow your inspector to better explain and even show you his findings. You will also learn a lot more information and detail about the house by attending.

Deducting Costs for Repairs

With your report in hand, you can better negotiate or renegotiate the price of the home.

Have these repairs done by a professional, or do them yourself with supplies from Deelat.com! Deelat Industrial carries everything you will need for home improvement from flooring and carpeting supplies to plumbing and electrical.

Sun Tunnel: Buying a Solar Tube for Home Installations

Sun tunnels are known by many different names – solar tubes, sky light tubes, light tunnels, etc. – but all these terms mean the same thing. Essentially, a sun tunnel is a miniature sky light. It creates a light-opening in the roof of the home, so that natural light can travel through the tube and serve as an interior light source.

Sun Tunnel

All sun tunnels have similar design. In general, sun tunnels have a dome or window that is attached to the roof of the home to capture sunlight, which is sealed properly. The sunlight then travels down a reflective tube – which may be made of plastic or aluminum and be rigid or flexible – ultimately delivering natural light into the home or office.

Choosing Sun Tunnels for the Home or Office

There are just a few considerations that need to be made when determining which sun tunnel is right for your home or office. First, and most importantly, you should determine the size of the sun tunnel.

There are a few different areas that you will need to size:

  • Sun window or dome: Determine what size is possible on the roof of your property.
  • Sun tunnel tubing: Choose a tunnel tubing that will reach from the roof to the interior ceiling.
  • Sun tunnel opening: Determine the possible opening size for the interior ceiling.

Secondly, you’ll also want to determine if you’ll need a rigid or flexible tube. In general, flexible tubes are ideal for cramped spaces where it’s impossible or difficult to reach the loft space above the ceiling. Solid tubes require loft access. The biggest difference is that rigid sun tunnels, in general, tend to limit the number of bounces of light, resulting in better sunlight transmission. But due to the higher cost of construction, rigid tunnels typically cost more.

How Effective Are Sun Tunnels?

The light results you receive from a sun tunnel are dependent on a number of factors. For example, the positioning of the sun tunnel, as well as the length of the tube, both factor into the finished light output. Typically, flexible and rigid tunnels also have an effect on the amount of light that is transmitted.

  • Positioning: Sun tunnels collect sunlight, and thus, tunnels installed on the most lighted areas of the roof, i.e. south-facing surfaces, receive the most light. Sun tunnels on south-facing surfaces tend to transmit more light. Yet, even if the tunnel isn’t placed on direct sunlight, it will still transmit a noticeable amount of light.
  • Tube Length: In general, longer tubes result in more lost light. The reason: Longer tubes require the light to be bounced more times to reach the diffuser in the ceiling below. As the light bounces, some of the energy is lost, resulting in dimmer outputs.
  • Rigid or Flexible: Finally, the type of tube that you use has an effect on light output. Flexible tubes tend to bounce light more, resulting in a greater loss of light. Rigid tubes, on the other hand, have smooth reflective surfaces, and as a result, the light is bounced more efficiently. This is particularly true over longer distances, in which case a long rigid tube would be the most effective option.

Overall, the average output of a 2-meter, non-south-facing tube would be about 100w for a rigid tube and 60 watts for a flexible tube. That’s about the same output as you’d receive from a standard lightbulb. For south-facing sun tunnels, the results can be about double.
