As parents age, more and more people are becoming stay at home caregivers. Although this can be an overwhelming responsibility, it unfortunately can be a necessary one.

Having the proper healthcare equipment and supplies can ease some of the challenges of caring for a loved one. Sometimes home renovations may be required to accommodate their needs. However, there are many products on the market today that can help with everything from showering to transporting. Below are some items to consider:

Shower Seats – Sitting in the shower is safer for the elderly as well as those that may have weakness or balance issues.

Wheelchairs or Walkers – Your physician or physical therapist will recommend either a wheelchair or walker to help provide some mobility to your loved one.

Incontinence Supplies – Along with briefs, you can also purchase bed and chair pads to protect your furniture and minimize the time spent with clean-up.

Reacher or Grabber – This handy tool can help those with disabilities to reach and grab hold of small objects such as the TV remote control.

Arm Slings or Knee Braces – In the event of an injury, arms slings, foot bandages, and knee braces can be purchased to provide healing support.

Bedside Commode – Often it can be difficult for an individual to make it to the bathroom when they are older or have a disability; consequently, a commode next to the bed will alleviate problems such as falling while trying to get to the bathroom.

Bed Assist Handle – This innovative product will help your loved one get in and out of bed thus minimizing the risk of a fall.

Home uric acid testing kits can provide users with accurate information quickly about uric acid, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. They are used primarily by patients that need to regularly test those levels, including people suffering from gout and diabetics.

Uric Acid Meter

Many testing kits are capable of measuring many different types of blood data. For instance, uric acid testers typically also meter blood glucose and some also include the ability to measure cholesterol. There are two main types of testing kits for uric acid and blood glucose: Urine test strips and blood meters.

Urine test strips are more convenient, yet the data is not as precise. Blood uric acid testing kits, on the other hand, require to the user to draw a small sample of blood, usually generated with a pin prick to the finger. Then, a replaceable testing strip that attaches to the digital reading device is placed into the blood. This method for testing provides much more accurate data. For example, blood glucose urine strips require the blood glucose level to be above 180 mg/dl for blood glucose to be detected, which is already above normal levels.

Uric Acid Test Strips System

Home kits can be used by users to:

Monitor symptoms of gout and diabetes

Ensure proper kidney function following injury

Help determine the cause of kidney stones

If your results appear abnormal, you should consult with your doctor to determine the course of treatment.

Reading Results: Consult With Your Doctor

Each person has unique needs when it comes to uric acid testing. However, home kits are not suitable for every patient. Some require testing to be conducted by a physician for the most accurate results, while others may use home testing kits to ensure levels are within range.

Reading Uric Acid Levels: Typically, normal uric acid levels in the blood are 3.5 to 7.2 mg/dl, according to Healthline.com. Low levels are not as common as higher levels of uric acid, and levels below normal may not be as serious as higher levels. Consult with your physician if you experience levels below the normal level. The digital readout of the uric acid meter will provide a measure of your level in mg/dl.

Reading Blood Glucose Levels: Blood glucose is a measure of sugar in the blood, and it is also measured in mg/dl. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, a random test should result in a maximum blood glucose level of 125 mg/dl. But tests do depend on what you last had to eat. For example, a test following a meal that’s high in sugar will likely spike your blood glucose levels. In fact, if you’ve recently eaten, your level might be as high as 200 mg/dl. Consult with your physician if you experience levels that appear abnormal.

Checking your blood pressure doesn’t always require a trip to the doctor’s office. In fact, home blood pressure monitors make it possible to test your blood pressure from the comfort of your living room. These wearable devices make it possible to regularly monitor blood pressure for abnormalities, caused by hypertension or heart disease.

Arm Blood Pressure Monitor

There are three main types of blood pressure monitoring devices: Arm band blood pressure monitors, wrist monitors and finger monitors. Arm band monitors provide the most precise measurements, while wrist and finger monitors provide a greater level of convenience for users. Whether you’re suffering from hypertension, heart disease or your doctor has recommended that you regularly monitor your blood pressure, a wearable monitor might be right for you.

How Often Should You Check Your Blood Pressure?

In general, healthy young people should have their blood pressure measured every five years, but as we age, it’s important to have our blood pressure monitored as regularly as once per year. Adults who have preexisting conditions like heart disease, hypertension or diabetes may be required by their doctors to monitor blood pressure as frequently as twice per week.

Early morning, before you have taken blood pressure medications, is the best time of day to test for more precise readings. Always be sure to check with your physician to ensure your monitor is properly calibrated and for a schedule for home monitoring your blood pressure.

How to read the numbers? The blood pressure monitor gives a reading of two numbers a systolic and diastolic number. A reading for instance would read 120-over-80 mm Hg, with 120 being pressure in the heart’s arteries when it is pumping and 80 referring to the pressure between beats. In general, optimal blood pressure is below 120 over 80 mm Hg. If either the number is above the optimal level, you may have abnormal blood pressure; above 140-over-90 is considered hypertension.

Arm Blood Pressure Monitor on wrist

Questions to Ask When Choosing a Blood Pressure Monitor

Does the arm band fit? The band should fit properly around the arm or wrist. A band that is too tight may not provide proper readings.

Is this right for your needs? Consult with your doctor to determine which type of monitor will provide you what you need.

Is the monitor validated? Blood pressure monitors are validated by a variety of healthcare organizations. Non-validated monitors, though, may be more cost-effective while providing accurate testing.

Knee supports and knee braces have many medical uses, and are widely used by athletes, people suffering from arthritis or for physical therapy. Most commonly, though, braces, supports and immobilizers are used following knee surgery for common knee injuries like an ACL rupture, runners, knee or an MCL tear. The brace, in effect, supports and stabilizes the knee, preventing it from moving or twisting out of place.

Post Op Hinged Knee Brace

There are many different types of knee supports, and they have many uses. More heavy-duty, hinged knee braces, for example, are commonly used post-surgery to prevent further damage to the knee. On the other hand, fabric crisscross braces may be used to relieve knee pain caused by osteoarthritis and provide reduced support for the knee.

So which type of knee brace is right for your ailment? It’s best to consult with a doctor, but understanding the various types can help you determine which might be right for you. Common knee braces, supports and immobilizers include:

Knee Supports, Sleeves and Stabilizers

Knee stabilizers and supports are a type of brace that can be worn for supporting the injured knees. They are designed to pad and support the anterior knee and patella, while adding a layer of cushioning. Knee sleeves, on the other hand, don’t offer as much support, and instead are designed to provide pressure to uninjured knees. Various types include:

Crisscross Knee Stabilizers: This type of knee stabilizer is strapped into placed behind the knee with two crisscrossed Velcro straps. This provides a degree of flexibility, while adding support and compression. They are often used for preventative measure, or in the later stages of rehabilitation.

Tri-Panel Stabilizers: The tri-panel stabilizer is a heavy-duty knee brace, used for mild to severe injuries. Most commonly, they are used to immobilize the knee following surgery, and they fit the leg from mid-thigh to mid-calf. Thus, when wearing a tri-panel stabilizer, the knee joint doesn’t bend, which is important following injuries like patellar dislocation.

Front-Opening Knee Support: These types of braces provide compression and warmth to the knee joint, during exercise or physical therapy. They are commonly used to relieve arthritis pain, and they can be worn under clothing.

Patella Straps: Knee straps, like a patella strap, are commonly used during sporting events or to relieve pain, and they apply pressure and compression to the knee joint. They can be used for preventative measure or for adding support to the joint following an injury.

Criss Cross Knee Stabilizer

Knee Braces: Functional, Hinged, Post-Op

Knee braces offer a greater degree of protection for an injured knee, and they’re often built with a hinge to accommodate the natural motion of the knee. Braces are commonly worn during athletic activities, and there are some versions that can be used to prevent knee injuries. Common types include:

Functional Knee Braces: Functional knee braces are a hinged brace that provide support for the ACL, while allowing the knee joint to bend. The purpose of these types of braces is to provide stability to the joint following injury, as well as decrease the risk for new injuries. The hinges in these types of braces can be adjusted so that the wearer can limit the knee’s range of motion. There are functional options available specifically for post-surgery, as well as for specific injuries.

Hearing aids have come a long way since they were first developed following World War II. Then, hearing aids were designed to help returning veterans who were experiencing hearing loss due to combat.

Deelat’s Loud N Clear ZD-900B Rechargeable Hearing Aid

Now, the technology is changing rapidly, said Dr. Ross Tonini, of the Baylor College of Medicine, in an interview with the BCM Momemtum.

First, the majority are now all-digital, providing better sound quality than analog versions. Plus, many of today’s hearing aids are web-connected, acting first as hearing aids, but thanks to Bluetooth, they’re now doing double duty as music players, cellphone receivers and more. The design has changed too.

Hearing aids are now smaller and more discrete. In fact, a majority of In-The-Ear hearing aids available on the market are silicon-based and blend in more naturally than ever. For instance, the Loud N Clear “In The Ear” Rechargeable Hearing Aid ZD-900B features a sleek, behind-the-ear design, that fits seamlessly in the ear.

It’s clear the technology has changed – but a new hearing aid that’s still in development should be a game-changer. A Serbian professor, who has worn hearing aids her entire life, decided to make a completely invisible hearing aid.

Enter the Nanoplug. Along with an industrial designer, Nevena Zivic came up with the Nanoplug – which fits inside the ear canal and is smaller than a coffee bean. The project has caught on too. Leading news websites like CNET and the International Business Times hailed the project a masterpiece.

And it appears many people are interested as well. An Indiegogo fundraising campaign had reached well beyond its goal of $80,000. Currently, more than a thousand donors have helped raise over $293,000.

The idea is also that the hearing aid will be economical, relatively speaking. At $400, it’s still light years ahead of most budget hearing aids. For instance, our behind-the-ear and ear-plug hearing aids start at just over $11.00. But that might change, as the cost of technology lowers. We’ll see, whenever it hits the market.

Deelat.com provides a variety of low-cost, affordable hearing aids.
